Barchelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB) Programme

One of the major challenges facing Ghana’s health sector is the inadequate number of medical doctors. The establishment of Baldwin Medical School (BMS) by Baldwin University College seeks to help address this critical shortfall through the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB) degree programme.

The six-year MB ChB degree commonly referred to as the medical degree trains physicians and surgeons to diagnose illnesses and to prescribe and administer appropriate treatments for patients suffering from disease or injury.

Physicians examine patients, obtain medical histories, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and provide counselling on diet, hygiene, and preventive healthcare.

Surgeons, on the other hand, specialize in the treatment of injury, disease, and deformity through surgical operations. Using a variety of instruments and techniques, surgeons correct physical deformities, repair tissues and bones after injury, or perform preventive surgeries for patients with debilitating conditions.

While many graduates practice general surgery, others pursue specialization in specific fields such as:

  • Orthopaedic Surgery – treatment of the musculoskeletal system.
  • Neurosurgery – treatment of the brain and nervous system
  • Cardiovascular Surgery – treatment of the heart and blood vessels
  • Otolaryngology (ENT) – treatment of the ear, nose, and throat
  • Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Programme Objectives

The MB ChB programme at the BMS seeks to:
